Student Advising for Psychology Majors

All psychology majors are required to have a faculty member who serves as their academic advisor.  Incoming first-year Psychology Majors will automatically have a faculty advisor assigned to them.   If you declare your major later, or are in need of a faculty advisor in psychology, you must contact the Undergraduate Psychology Office (Room 142-A Kent Hall, lpsych@kent.edu, 330-672-2912) in order to be assigned an advisor.  When you contact the office manager make sure that you give them information regarding your interests in the field of psychology, what you hope to do with your degree, and any faculty members with whom you'd most like to work.  All full-time, tenure track faculty in Psychology serve as advisors to undergraduate students, but sometimes specific faculty members will not be available due to sabbatical, etc. Your advisor can help to explain the major requirements. More importantly, this person acts as your mentor, providing information about how to get the most from the opportunities in our undergraduate psychology program. He or she can also help you explore career options and advise you regarding the requirements and application process for graduate study in psychology. It is very important for students interested in graduate study in psychology or related fields to consult with their faculty advisor early in their career.

Student Advising for Psychology Minors

All psychology minors must meet with the Undergraduate Psychology Coordinator, Dr. Jill Folk. You can contact her via e-mail at jfolk@kent.edu or by phone at 330-672-4095. Dr. Folk will serve as your advisor and mentor and can help guide you in respect to class choices and career possibilities.

Request for Information about Transfer or Transient Credits

Requests for evaluation of psychology transfer credits or transient course work (courses taken by KSU students at other colleges) should be directed to the Psychology Undergraduate Coordinator, Jill Folk (330-672-4095; jfolk@kent.edu).

Group Advising

The department also sponsors group advising sessions twice a year.  The Advising 101 session is intended for Freshman and newly declared majors, deals with career goals, course choices for those who are unsure about career goals, and the Psychology major requirements. The Advising 201 session is intended for sophomore, junior, and senior psychology majors and will provide information about career planning, including varieties of graduate school and how to prepare. Both sessions will be offered in both the fall and the spring. Dates for these sessions will be announced via the department e-mail listserv and flyers around the building. If you are not a member of the department e-mail listserv please contact the Undergraduate Psychology Office manager to be added to the recipient list (lpsych@kent.edu or 330-672-2912).

In addition, the psychology office can help students to look into volunteer opportunities in the community related to the field of psychology, as well as internship opportunities in the field. Finally, the office has a bookshelf with copies of textbooks for many of the courses offered in the department. You can use these texts within the office whenever it is open.
