Needs Assessment and Improvement Planning

The Center is recognized as a leader in planning and conducting needs assessments, including community health needs assessments as required for hospitals and local (county and city) health departments. Hospitals are required to conduct community needs assessments to maintain their tax-exempt status, based on provisions in the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Local health departments may be required to conduct Community Health Needs Assessments under state laws (including in Ohio, under the Ohio Revised Code) or to achieve and maintain accreditation by the national Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Over the past decade, the Center has assisted communities in conducting health needs assessments to inform development of community health improvement plans. The Center employs faculty and staff, including former health commissioners, with considerable knowledge who can provide needs assessment services and/or technical assistance.
