Flashes 101 Instructor Information

Ideally, applicants for Flashes 101 Instructor positions should:

  • Have experience teaching or serving first year students. 
  • Be willing to develop a positive relationship with each student in their assigned section. 
  • Be willing and available to engage with students over Fall and Spring semesters outside of the classroom. This will include class time, individual meetings, and other intentional follow-ups (particularly in the Spring) with students.
  • Be willing to work with and further develop your assigned Peer Success Mentor (PSM) 
  • Commit to being present at all sessions of their assigned section.  
  • Commit to meet weekly with their assigned PSM to co-design class content and discuss concerns about students. 
  • Be willing and available to participate in the assessment of their assigned section. 
  • Be willing and available to participate in a two-day, in-person Instructor Academy on May 18-19, 2023, at the Kent Campus.

Following participation in the Flashes 101 Instructor Academy, it is expected that instructors will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of “student ready” principles that support sense of belonging. 
  • Utilize teaching strategies which support First-gen, high-need, and underrepresented students. 
  • Be familiar with University resources available to support student success. 
  • Understand the challenges and needs of first-year students.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Master’s degree, in any field.

Compensation:

Flashes 101 Instructors will receive a stipend of $2000 for participation in the Flashes 101 Instructor Academy, course development, and assessment of course learning outcomes.

A complete application will include:

  • At least one (1), but no more than three (3), letters of recommendation from any of the following: students, a department chair/unit director, or other colleague who can speak to your commitment to undergraduate student success.
  • A letter of interest describing 1) how the applicant's experience and qualifications align with the job description and 2) why the applicant is interested in serving as a Flashes 101 Instructor.
