Kent.edu webmasters and web visitors - changes have arrived!

Last week’s Faculty/Staff News Now publication made the university community aware of the fact that the year-long Drupal 7 to Drupal 9 project, undertaken by the web presence group in the Division of Information Technology, web team from the Division of University Communications and Marketing and our partner, One Origin, would wrap up this month.

Project Update

This weekend the project team flipped the switch for Kent State’s website so that it now lives in a Drupal 9 environment rather than a Drupal 7 instance.

While the project team hopes that 80-90% of the changes remain behind the scenes and that the transition is seamless, this isn’t the case in its entirety. The team has moved into phase 2 of the project with a focus on tackling styling issues. If you experience any frustration or inconvenience, remember many other organizations endured and worked through pain points associated with the sunset of Drupal 7 too.

Next Steps for Website Visitors

If you encounter any type of errors, please take these steps:

  1. Go to www.kent.edu/websupport.
  2. Scan the list of known issues. If your issue is on that list, PLEASE DO NOT REPORT IT AGAIN. Multiple reports of the same issue will delay our ability to triage additional issues.
  3. If your issue is not on the known issues list, submit a support ticket by clicking the “Submit a Support Ticket” button.

We will be triaging reported issues and working as quickly as we can to resolve them.

Next Steps for Webmasters

In addition to following the above-mentioned steps to report issues, please remember to replicate any content you created or edited on your website between Nov. 30 at midnight and Sunday, Dec. 11. If you forget to do so, this is a reminder that the content will not be posted. You can refer to cmsstage.kent.edu should you need to reference a particular webpage.

Known Issues

  1. Flickr embeds will not display in Drupal 9 as nicely as they did in Drupal 7. This is a system limitation. You may want to use the Modal Image Gallery BP Paragraph element (which holds a maximum of 8 images per gallery and allows for multiple galleries to be stacked) instead or link to your Flickr gallery. You can find out how to use BP Paragraphs here.
  2. The Twitter social block will only display if your account posts 4 tweets within a seven-day time span. If you fail to meet that requirement, the block will simply not show. The number of days ago the Tweet was posted also will not display.
  3. Focal point on images may or may not be repaired by Monday, Dec. 12. If it isn’t repaired Monday, the solution will come soon thereafter.
