| Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a national program that offers peer-facilitated group study sessions for students enrolled in large, high-risk liberal arts and science courses. High-risk courses are courses that have a D, F, or withdrawal rate of at least 30 percent. The basic difference between SI and other tutoring services offered at the Academic Success Center is that SI leaders actually attend classes along with the students they are tutoring. Each SI leader has already taken and successfully completed the course. SI is completely voluntary, and available to students on a drop-in basis. Sessions are typically held in academic buildings. Announcements about SI are made in targeted classes during the first week of the semester. SI sessions are offered throughout the semester, normally beginning during the second or third week of classes. SI sessions provide students with course-specific learning and study strategies, note taking and test taking skills, and the opportunity to study with their peers in a group format. National research, along with data obtained since the beginning of Kent State's program, has shown that students who attend SI sessions normally earn at least a half a letter grade higher than students who do not attend. |
