Kent State University offers a program for newly enrolled African American freshman students who want to enhance their opportunity for academic success and enrich their college experience. It is called the Academic STARS (STudents Achieving and Reaching Success) Program. The program provides opportunities for building a solid academic foundation excellence in education and leadership development.
The Academic STARS Program is a freshman year transition/retention program that begins with a seven-week summer program. The summer program offers a unique opportunity to earn up to 7 credit hours that will be applied toward graduation and an introduction to a wide range of resources available at Kent State University.
In addition, participants are taught success strategies and skills in the areas of time management, note taking, studying for tests, test taking, goal setting, and decision making. During the freshman year, a variety of programs are provided to the students that include academic advising, workshops, and study tables.
Since its inception in 1990, the Program has enabled numerous students in interacting with other students who share in common goals, achievements and accomplishments; participating in campus organizations and holding leadership positions; and contributing to building a foundation for supportive and diverse campus community.
