Student Spotlight: Ugochukwu Ugwu

Ugochukwu Ugwu

Ugochukwu Ugwu is a doctoral candidate in the Applied Mathematics program in the College of Arts and Sciences. His research interests include tensor factorization for high-dimensional data that arise in machine learning, video restoration and medical imaging – where data is often represented with tensors. Ugochukwu is developing and analyzing computational methods for image and video restoration. 

While tensors are often tricky to work with and the methods become fairly complicated, Ugochukwu has shown that exploitation of the tensor structure gives restorations of higher quality than if this structure is ignored. He was invited to present his research at the SIAM Applied Linear Algebra Conference in New Orleans this May. This invitation presents the opportunity for Ugochukwu to collaborate with former Ph.D. students from Kent State University, as well as researchers from France.

After completing his Ph.D, Ugochukwu plans to work in academics. 

When asked what he likes most about Kent State University, Ugochukwu explained that the diversity of the university has been the best part of his KSU experience. When Ugochukwu is not working on his research, he often spends time reading motivational books, such as Confessions by Saint Augustine. He also enjoys spending time with friends and family.
