Sense of Belonging Survey
In Fall 2022, Recreation and Wellness Services launched its first Sense of Belonging Survey as part of our Strategic Plan. The feedback provided gave us valuable insights and highlighted opportunities for improvement, many of which have guided enhancements to our programs, facilities, and services over the past three years.
- At the Adventure Center, we introduced a Trip Scholarship and created the Wilderness Wardrobe to help remove financial and gear barriers, so more students can take part in outdoor adventures. We also launched youth programs like Schools Out Adventures to help parenting students and local families with childcare.
- In Aquatics, we started offering Sensory Swim sessions and adaptive swim classes to better serve individuals with disabilities.
- Over in Fitness and Wellness, we added wheelchair rollers for Spinning, expanded our adaptive equipment and fitness classes, made group personal training more affordable, added a walk/run/roll option to the Black Squirrel Race, and updated our marketing to better reflect the diversity of our campus community.
- The Ice Arena rolled out new program evaluations.
- Kent State of Well-being launched a new Programs by Request suite and hosted Fresh Check Day to highlight the importance of mental health.
- We also listened beyond the survey: holding follow-up student focus groups, providing staff with customer service training, and even creating a belonging survey just for our student employees.
- To bring it all together, we launched the EveryBODY is Welcome campaign—a reminder that accessibility, inclusion, and belonging are at the heart of everything we do.
Fall 2025: “Belonging starts with your feedback!”
This fall, we are conducting the survey again. The confidential responses will help us better understand students’ day-to-day experiences and interactions with Recreation and Wellness Services staff, facilities, and programs. Your participation is essential as we continue working to create an inclusive environment and design experiences that support the needs of our entire community.
