THE SPIRIT OF WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2024

The Spirit of Women in Business (SWIB) Conference is an annual event hosted by the Kent State University Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship. The conference brings together women from diverse professional backgrounds.

2023 May 4 Candlelight Vigil

A prayer was read in Hebrew at the B'nai B'rith Hillel Marker on the May 4 memorial site as part of the annual candlelight walk and vigil on May 3. The silent walk around campus begins each year at at 11 p.m. and takes about 60 minutes. Afterward, at midnight, the vigil begins as one person with a candle stands in the each of the four spaces where a student fell. After 30 minutes, another person takes their place, and then another and another, for the 12-hour remembrance. As someone who studied higher education administration, Kent State University Assistant Professor Erica Eckert, Ph.D., had always wondered what it would have been like to experience the May 4, 1970, Kent State shootings as a student affairs administrator.  The research she conducted to answer this question was selected as the presentation for this year’s annual Jerry M. Students are exploring new methods of storytelling in the latest collaboration between the School of Emerging Media and Technology, Design Innovation and the Reinberger Library Center. Children’s Literature in Augmented Reality is unlike many other courses on campus. The class examines storytelling, social justice and augmented reality to create new, immersive experiences inspired by children’s literature. Kent State University has awarded the Alan Canfora Activism Scholarship for 2023-2024 to activist and incoming Kent State student Kyndra Irwin of Mount Gilead High School in Mount Gilead, Ohio. The Alan Canfora Activism Scholarship celebrates Canfora’s life, his Kent State experience and the importance of social justice and advocacy to society. On May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State demonstrators, killing four students and wounding nine, including Canfora.
