Learning Sciences and Educational Psychology FAQs

• M.Ed. - This degree requires 30 hours of coursework and is typically completed in 18-24 months
• M.A. - This degree requires 39 hours of coursework, which includes 6 hours of independent research that culminates in a thesis. The coursework is typically completed in 18-24 months and the research project/thesis takes another 12-18 months to complete. 
• Ph.D. - This degree requires 120 hours of coursework and is typically completed in 48 months.

Step 1. Download the program of study for your program.

Step 2. Make a general plan based on when core electives are being offered.

Step 3. Plan out the time course of when you will take the courses, add these to the program of study, and sign and date the document. 

Step 4. Send your completed form to your advisor so that they may sign it.

Step 5. When returned to you, send the signed form to the Office of Graduate Student Services (Valorie Adkins, vadkins@kent.edu) 

Your plan of study may change over the course of your time with us, and that is ok. When you are ready to graduate, we can submit an updated plan of study to OGSS. If you have difficulty with any of this, please get a meeting with your advisor one week prior to the beginning of the fall (or spring) semester.

Educational Psychology

The Masters of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Psychology is a professional degree designed for educators and anyone interested in how to apply the science of learning, development, and cognition to real-world situations. This degree is 100% online and can be completed in as little as 18 months. 

Gifted Education Endorsement Preparation - Non-Degree

The concentration in Gifted Education can be combined with the M.Ed. or earned as a separate certificate.  

Learning Sciences

We offer two research degrees in Learning Sciences. The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Learning Sciences allows students to learn the field while gaining training in all phases of the research process. This degree requires coursework and an independent research project culminating in a thesis. 

The Ph.D. in Learning Sciences is an interdisciplinary degree program (with Psychological Sciences) that trains students in basic and applied research.

Yes, the M.Ed. is a professional, applied degree and the M.A. is a research degree. 

The M.Ed. in Educational Psychology prepares students to apply cutting-edge research findings to various settings, including K-12 education, museums, after-school programs, and business and industry. 

The M.A. in Learning Science trains students in research methods, analysis, and statistics and prepares them for advanced graduate training or careers in research, analysis, data science, and evaluation.
