Where is your hometown?

I am from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Why did you choose Kent State University?

After working at a public university for ten years, I was ready to continue my education and pursue a Ph.D. I chose Kent State’s Higher Education Administration program for the quality of the faculty, variety of classes offered, and flexibility of the course schedule that fits working professionals.

What do you like most about living in/near Kent? Do you have a favorite local spot or activity?

One of my favorite things about the Kent area is the opportunity to do outdoor activities. From biking the Portage Path to Kayaking the Cuyahoga River, there are fun outdoor activities to do throughout the year. One of my favorite local spots is Beckwith Orchards. This farm grows many different fruits all year round and makes delicious pies on the weekend.

What is your favorite KSU memory?

One of my favorite memories is seeing all the flowers bloom on campus during the spring and summer. The university does a great job at keeping its green spaces beautiful.

What are some differences you've noticed in being a graduate student (expectations, pressures, visibility, etc.) than those of an undergraduate student?

In graduate school, professors are more flexible with homework due dates and understand you might have family and work responsibilities. Don't be afraid to ask for an extension on an assignment if you have a genuine concern. However, make sure you communicate your needs on a timely basis. Communication is a must to keep an excellent professional relationship with them.

What advice do you have for incoming graduate students?

Create a personal system for keeping track of your notes and course handouts. For example, keep a folder in Google Drive for every class you take and have a standard way of labeling your files. You will reference these materials in your courses, comprehensive exams, and dissertation. You will find it easier to find information when it's organized.

Fun Fact About Me:

I used to be part of a Latin dance team when I was in my 20s.
