“After losing my job at a research lab in Cleveland because of the pandemic, I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to pay for my rent, car insurance and other necessities. I was able to continue working as an epidemiology graduate assistant in the College of Public Health, but it wasn’t enough to help cover all of my costs. I was being threatened with an eviction notice when I found the Kent State Emergency Grant Fund. I applied for assistance, and the help I received through the fund was very important to me and helped see me through a really difficult time.”

“I completed six years in the Rising Scholars Program, during which I learned about career paths that I never would have thought of on my own and developed my leadership skills. I watched how so many people were helping me and the others in this program find our places in the world, and I knew I wanted to give back in some way. Wanting to help other students who are in the same position I was in years ago motivated me to work harder, and I now attend Kent State Salem, where I am a mentor for local students. There is no way I would ever be at Kent State without Rising Scholars. I am a much stronger person because of this life-changing program.”

“My experiences as a scholarship recipient in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and also as a Brain Health Research Institute Fellow really opened my eyes to so many things. I am a mathematics and neuroscience major, and my Fellows Capstone project focused on increasing the quality of life for patients with spinal cord injuries. Through my research, I learned that there are 400,000 people in the U.S. with spinal cord injuries, and we are looking to develop new treatments to improve their quality of life. This experience has helped me learn where I belong and that I want to make a difference in the world.”
