A message from Melody Tankersley, Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Provost
The world of higher education is evolving rapidly, and Kent State University is committed to adapting thoughtfully and responsibly so we can continue to provide exceptional learning experiences for current and future students. Guided by that commitment, the Division of Academic Affairs has launched Transformation 2028 (T28), a strategic, multi‑year initiative designed to strengthen our academic foundation and position the university for long‑term success.
At its core, Transformation 2028 focuses on advancing Kent State’s academic strength, long-term sustainability, and responsiveness to the needs of students and society. Transformation 2028 is our proactive approach to ensure that we are meeting our current and future students’ academic needs in efficient ways, ways that are grounded in our mission and values, and that keep student success at the center of every decision.
The initiative has two interconnected goals that are being pursued simultaneously. First, we are strengthening Academic Affairs through strategic reorganization and realignment of colleges, departments and support units. This work focuses on reducing duplication, sharing administrative resources and leadership where appropriate, and streamlining operations so that our time, talent and resources are used as effectively as possible.
Second, Transformation 2028 creates the conditions for academic innovation and growth. By aligning related disciplines and services in more intentional ways, we are better positioned to support interdisciplinary collaboration, respond to evolving workforce needs, and invest in new and emerging academic opportunities. Importantly, this work is not about diminishing programs, but about preserving academic quality and distinctiveness while strengthening the structures that support teaching, research and student learning.
As this work moves forward, some academic units and programs may align within new organizational structures. Alumni, donors and friends of Kent State may notice changes in college or school names, or hear from different academic leaders than in the past. What remains constant is Kent State’s commitment to the integrity, excellence and reputation of our academic programs, and to the value of the degrees our alumni have earned.
Transformation 2028 is a complex initiative that will be implemented thoughtfully and in phases through 2028. Throughout this process, decisions are informed by data, careful analysis and extensive engagement with faculty, staff and students through shared governance. Our priority is to ensure continuity for students while building a stronger, more adaptable academic environment for the future.
Kent State’s mission endures: to provide life‑changing educational experiences, foster discovery and creativity, and serve our communities in Ohio and around the world. Transformation 2028 is about sustaining that mission so that today’s students and tomorrow’s alumni continue to benefit from the opportunities that have long defined Kent State University.
As alumni and supporters, you remain an essential part of our community. We are grateful for your continued engagement and pride in Kent State, and we look forward to moving confidently into the future together.
