Frequently Asked Questions

What Club Sports are offered?
  • Kent State typically has over 20 different Club Sport teams, including gender-specific offerings in some sports. Click on “Club Sport Offerings” to see the current list of active Club Sport teams!
  • All Club Sport teams are required to be “Competitive Clubs,” which means they are part of a League or National Governing Body which helps them compete against other teams in their region. RecWell does not currently financially support clubs who wish to only be instructional or recreational; some Clubs may split their members into a recreational team and a competitive team roster to welcome new players.
How do I join a Club Sport?
  • Each Club Sport has its own process for recruiting and securing new members. Some may require try-outs or to attend a few practices before you make the team, and others are always recruiting new members.
  • To find out how to join a specific Club team, please visit our “Club Sports Contacts” page, and use the links to email the club that you are interested in!
Why should I join a Club Sport?
  • There are so many great benefits and reasons to join a team! Whether you want to continue playing a sport you love at a high-level, or you’ve always wanted to try a sport, but never had an opportunity to join a team, most clubs are very welcoming to new members!
  • On top of that, since Club Sports are also Student Organizations, club Officers have the ability to develop great transferable skills and experiences that can prepare them for their career after college, such as leadership, delegation, finance and budgetary management, and even social media management!
Who is in charge?

While some club sports have coaches, most are completely student-driven with advisement from coaches, advisers, and the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities. Club sports are unique sports entities because all of the organizational duties are performed by the student leaders and are self-managed through a team of student officers with positions including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, etc. Club sports prepare their own budgets, with the assistance of the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities as needed; schedule their own practices and games, and may hire their own coaches/instructors with the approval of the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities.

Is there a cost to participate?
  • While RecWell provides some funding to our Club teams, each team is primarily responsible for raising funds to offset the cost of their equipment, travel, uniforms, and other expenses. Due to this, most Club teams have some form of membership dues or fees, which they may require members to pay to join or tryout for the team.
  • Each club is responsible for determining an appropriate membership fee to help offset their expenses for the year. Please visit our “Club Sports Contacts” page, to contact a team if you would like to know more about their registration process and fees.
How do I start a Club Sport?
  1. Contact Eli Mallahan, Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities at emallaha@kent.edu for guidance on starting a new Club Sport. We may be able to put you in touch with other prospective members that have shared an interest in forming a similar club.
  2. If we do not currently offer a sport, and you want to form a team, your first step should be recruiting at least 3-5 other people who are interested and committed to forming this team, and its long-term success.
  3. Once your group is established, you will need to begin the process to Register as a New Student Organization through the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) and complete those necessary requirements.
  4. After you have completed those steps, you can contact Eli Mallahan, Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities at emallaha@kent.edu for RecWell’s additional requirements for starting a new Club Sport
  5. The Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Outdoor Facilities. reserves the right to deny application which is determined to be of high risk to participants, may pose negative publicity to the Club Sports program, may not serve the interests of the department, may conflict with similar programs offered, may not be financially self-sufficient, or would place an unnecessary stress on other programs currently offered by Recreation and Wellness Services.
