The national juried art exhibition, Focus: Fiber 2019 is heading to the Kent State University Museum next month, marking the first new exhibit for the Museum in 2019.
Opening March 1, this biennial exhibit features contemporary fiber art from 35 artists belonging to the Textile Art Alliance (TAA) of the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA). The artists provided 45 works of contemporary fiber art, including weaving, sculpture, felting, tapestry, embroidery and quilts. The exhibition is co-sponsored by the Textile Art Alliance of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Renowned Japanese interdisciplinary artist, Nami Yamamoto, is serving as the juror for the exhibit. Yamamoto is an award-winning artist currently serving as the director of studio operations at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia and is an adjunct faculty in the graduate program in Textile Design at Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia University).
On Friday, March 15, there will be a Fashion Focus series gallery tour in the Museum with exhibition artists Petra Soesemann and Eileen Woods and this year’s Focus: Fiber coordinators, Sandy Shelenberger and Karen Hinkle from 2 - 3 pm. Fashion Focus is a series of artists talks in which featured exhibition artists discuss their work, career and creative process. This event is free for KSU students, faculty, staff, and Museum Members. The event is included with paid admission for the general public.
Additionally, there will be a special artist’s reception on Thursday, March 21, from 5 – 7 pm, in the Stager and Blum galleries where attendees can celebrate and meet the talented artists of the Focus: Fiber 2019 exhibit. Light refreshments will be served, and attendees will have the opportunity to view all exhibits currently on display in the museum. Remarks will begin at 6 pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Established in 1934, the mission of TAA is to increase appreciation of the textile arts through lectures, workshops, and exhibitions and to support the textile collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
About the KSU Museum
The Kent State University Museum is located at 515 Hilltop Drive, at the corner of E. Main St. and S. Lincoln St. in Kent, Ohio. It features over 30,000 pieces in its collection, amassed from many generous donors. The Museum is open to the public on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm; Thursday from 10 am – 8 pm; and Sunday from noon – 4 pm. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for children aged 5 to 17. The museum is free for children age 5 and under and for those with a Kent State ID. Sunday admission is free for all ages.
