Meet Rossana Torres, a Mary Ann Stephens & John R. Graham Award for Excellence in Graduate Research & Scholarship recipient. Rossana is a Ph.D. student in the Special Education program in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services.

Please give a short overview of your research.

As a doctoral student in the Special Education program, my research focus is in the intersectionality of English Learners and special education. My goal is to contribute with research-based practices in the special education field to properly identify students, whose home language is other than English, who have a disability that has an adverse effect in their education.

What made you choose to pursue your graduate degree here at Kent State?

Kent State has earned an R1 research institution. I am honored to be part of the research team at the College of Education, Health and Human Services.

What do you enjoy most about attending Kent State for graduate school? and/or What do you anticipate taking advantage of at KSU?

Kent State University main campus is a joy to navigate. I particularly like being at the library where I can find the peace and motivation to do my research.

What are your future goals?

It is my goal to inform policy and practice in the proper identification of English Learners for Special Education.

What does this award mean to you and how will it aid you?

This award has been a huge motivator and validation of the work I am doing. It means I am on the right path and that my goals and objectives are meaningful. This awards helps me lessen the financial needs, which I truly appreciate.
