Police Academy Requirements for Admission

Dear Candidate:

Thank you for your interest in the Basic Police Academy.

The following information has been prepared to help familiarize you with some general requirements should you be planning on a rewarding career in the law enforcement field. We have also posted forms that must be completed to apply for entrance into the Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training Program here at Kent State University.

Requirements for admission to Basic Peace Officer training

Prospective cadets must meet the following minimum standards to apply:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certain age restrictions apply
  • Must be in good physical condition. Minimums Fitness Requirements
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must not have any convictions for felony, drug, or crimes of violence
  • Pass a physical fitness and drug test

Sealed or expunged felony convictions as an adult will exclude a prospective cadet from admission to the Academy.
 

General Academy Requirements and Policies

  • A student must comply with the dress code
  • A student must author & maintain notebooks
  • A student must attend 100% of classes
  • A student must pass a state certification exam with at least 70%
  • Students must pass all psychomotor skills
