Times of change and transition can evoke a variety of thoughts and emotions, especially when they are connected to your student.
Luckily, the University Orientation team provides students Destination Kent State (DKS), which is an overnight student orientation event where your student and their registered guests attend programming centered on financial aid, housing, commuting, health and safety and academic advising. This is also the event where you student will register for their classes.
During this fully immersive Kent State experience, your student will eat in our dining halls, have the opportunity to connect with incoming and current Kent State students and begin to explore their new home.
The college transition process is truly an exciting time as each student is embarking on an expedition of self-discovery and the pursuit of their dreams. However, this transition can also feel a bit overwhelming, specifically for parents and families, when you're not sure how to best prepare for what’s next.
No matter how you or your student may be feeling – excited, overwhelmed or full of questions – we are here for you, as Flashes Take Care of Flashes.
DKS PARENT AND GUEST ORIENTATION
We strongly encourage parents and guests to register and attend the in-person DKS program with your student. Your student can add you to their registration form inside their applicant portal. Students have up until 10 days prior to the event to adjust or update their registration. There is not a separate registration for parents or guests. For more information about how to support your student, visit our DKS parents and families webpage.
DKS offers specific parent and guest sessions throughout the duration of the program, covering topics such as your student’s health and safety, billing and financial aid, course registration information, academic support resources, as well as some suggestions on how to best support your student from afar.
Additionally, you will have the opportunity to meet Kent Campus staff and get any questions answered while you're here.
STUDENT ORIENTATION PORTAL
Students will receive emails leading up to DKS about what to bring and how to prepare for orientation. Several days prior to the event, students will receive an invitation to log into our orientation portal to view their schedule for DKS. Inside that portal, they will see their DKS schedule and academic appointment time once they check in their first day of DKS.
Again, no matter what feelings the words "transition" and "change" evoke for you, we want you to know that there are a number of ways to find support and get your questions answered. As an orientation office, we want to welcome you to the Golden Flash family and let you know that we are here for you every step of the way during your and your student’s transition.
We can’t wait to connect with you at DKS.
