Activist-in-Residence
The Arc Institute at Kent State University promotes collaborative and innovative work – both scholarly and applied – that advances the understanding of factors contributing to unequal outcomes for individuals and communities. Our mission is to foster partnerships and research that inform practical solutions and support positive change.
A signature initiative of the Arc Institute, the Activist-in-Residence program brings experienced community leaders to campus to engage directly with students, faculty, and staff. Through seminars, workshops, panel discussion, and collaborative projects, Activists-in-Residence share real-world expertise and inspire action on pressing social issues.
This program bridges academic learning with community engagement, enriching students’ educational experience and strengthening university-community partnerships. For example, Jazmin Long, the inaugural Activist-in-Residence, worked with students and faculty on advancing maternal health, organized impactful events, and provided professional development opportunities for both students and educators. Most recently, Dr. José Salinas, collaborated with the university community to address challenges faced by migrant children in Ohio, including educational disruptions and health disparities. Their leadership has fostered meaningful dialogue and strengthened partnerships between Kent State and the broader community.
By hosting accomplished activists, the Arc Institute creates opportunities for the university community to connect scholarship with real-world impact, supporting a culture of engagement, innovation, and public service.
