All new students for spring of 2021 are required to complete orientation.

To complete orientation:

  1. Register for a Destination Kent State New Student Orientation date via FlashLine — this is the day you will have your academic advising appointment and register for classes!
  2. Download the DKS mobile app. You will log in with your FlashLine credentials

Two Ways to Participate

Participate in one of two ways. You will need to choose your preferred path before you start to ensure the best visitor experience.

How to choose the best path?

Do you prefer to have access at your fingertips on your phone via a guided experience? Then the app is for you!

Do you prefer to pick and choose from various content options on a larger screen, such as your iPad or your computer? If so, we encourage you to take advantage of the web-based version.

The Division of Student Affairs podcasts are aimed at informing incoming and returning students about all the great resources Kent State University has to offer.

In preparation for DKS New Student Orientation:

  • Registration begins October 1
  • There are five New Student Orientation dates from November 2020 - January 2021 for Spring 2021 admits.
  • Log-in and regularly check your Flashline account. All admitted students receive information in their admission letter about their Flashline portal account (includes email) which includes your login, Student ID number, and password. Students will be required to complete some activities within the Flash Line portal. Please be aware that email is the official form of communication at Kent State University and students should begin checking their accounts regularly.

The enrollment fee of $150.00 must be paid before you can register for the DKS: New Student Orientation.

Registration for the Destination Kent State program will begin on October 1. To make your appointment for Destination Kent State: New Student Orientation, please log on to your FlashLine account and follow the links to the Destination Kent State registration system. Select the date that is available for your major (that date will be a “live” link in the scheduling system).

Have your answers to the following questions ready when logging in to your Flashline account to register for Destination Kent State.

  • Will you have any college credit that will transfer including College Credit Plus (CCP), Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB)?
  • If you have college credit, all official transcripts must be submitted to the Admissions Office at least two weeks prior to your scheduled appointment. Please indicate the number of anticipated transfer credit hours.

Programs that require math and/or foreign language will require students to complete a placement assessment (personal calculators are not permitted). See your Next Steps Checklist in Flashline for assistance in determining which placements are required.

Q: Is Kent State University still offering Destination Kent State New Student Orientation despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

A: Yes, DKS New Student Orientation will be offered as a comprehensive online experience.

Q: Will I still be able to meet with an academic advisor in my college and register for Spring 2021 classes?

A: Yes, on your orientation date, you will meet remotely with an academic advisor to discuss your academic plan and register for Spring 2021 courses.

Q: Do I need to pay the $150 enrollment fee prior to registering for orientation?

A: Yes, you must pay your $150 enrollment fee to confirm your place in the Spring 2021 class prior to completing your DKS New Student Orientation registration. If you have not paid this fee prior to registering, you will redirected to a pay site during the registration process.

Q:Is the Destination Kent State New Student Orientation experience mandatory for new students?

A: Yes, the DKS New Student Orientation experience is mandatory. New Student Orientation is designed to help you feel more comfortable when you begin classes in the fall. At Kent State, we believe in giving students the tools they need to succeed. We make a special effort at New Student Orientation to provide critical information for both commuter and residence hall students.

Q: What should I do if I want to change my major? prior to or after attending the program?

A: Prior to DKS New Student Orientation Date: If you decide to change your major, contact the Admissions office at (330) 672-2444 as soon as possible. It is best to make the changes prior to making your appointment for Destination Kent State so that you can speak with the advisor for your major. (Changing your major may necessitate changing your orientation date.)

After completing DKS New Student Orientation: If you decide to change your major after attending, contact your academic advisor.

Q: What should I do if I want to add a minor or concentration?

A: Speak with your academic advisor during orientation to discuss adding a minor or concentration.

Q: How do I get credit for advanced placement or international baccalaureate exams?

A: Kent State awards college credit for Advanced Placement exams with scores of three, four, or five. The Credit Transfer website provides specific information about scores and credit. If you requested that the College Board send your scores to Kent State, your scores will be evaluated when Kent State receives the score report. You will see credit posted onto your Flashline transcript. Kent State awards college credit for most International Baccalaureate exams with scores of five or higher on higher-level exams. Ask your high school International Baccalaureate coordinator to send a copy of your exam report to the Kent State. For more information, go to the Credit the Credit Transfer website. Tell your academic advisor during New Student Orientation about the tests you have taken so they can accurately advise you about coursework. Submit your unofficial transcript to Kent State University prior to your orientation date.

Q: I took college courses while in high school (either at Kent State or another college/university). Do I need to complete New Student Orientation?

A: Yes. Any student who took advantage of the opportunity to earn college credit in high school, (i.e. College Credit Plus, Advanced Placement, CLEP or International Baccalaureate exams) regardless of the number of hours transferred to Kent State, is required to complete the New Student Orientation program. Submit your unofficial transcripts or test scores prior to your orientation date.

Q: Is it possible to change my reservation for the New Student Orientation program?

A: Yes. Please log back on to the FlashLine web portal and your Student Checklist to change your date.
