What were some highlights of your first year? Were there offices or specific individuals that helped you during your transition?

My first year at Kent State has largely been defined by two student organizations: Delta Sigma Pi and Kent Interhall Council. Pledging Delta Sigma Pi during my first semester and being on the Hall Council for Prentice and Dunbar allowed me to meet so many amazing close friends that have helped me to feel comfortable and confident with my new surroundings. These two organizations helped me to feel like I had a home away from home at Kent State. Hall Council allowed me to form a closer relationship with some of my RAs, and I felt increasingly comfortable talking to them about problems that I was going through with school or family at the time. If I had to say any single individual has helped make a difference during my transition more than any other, I would have to credit John McDermott. He was the President of Delta Sigma Pi, and on the E-Board for Kent Interhall Council during my first semester. John was a model student leader, and always was a great resource to talk to about concerns I had with classes, extracurricular, work, or any topic that would help me feel more comfortable at Kent. I look to him as a role model, and hope that I can have a similar impact on students at Kent in the future as a Flashguide!
