John L. Doyle (1939-2010)

Sharpshooters 76

Born in Chicago, Illinois, John Lawrence Doyle received his B.A. at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1962 and his M.A. at Northern Illinois University in 1968. With his colorful lithographs and drawings, he acquired national recognition, soon exhibiting at the 22nd Boston Printmakers Exhibition in 1971, the Art Institute of Chicago in 1972, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1973. In 1974, he collaborated with master printer Roland Poshka of the Fishy Whale Press in Rockford, Illinois. Together, Doyle and Poshka would publish multiple print series, thrusting them further into the spotlight of the art world.

Doyle’s works are intended as a reflection of mankind. This series, entitled “Sharpshooters 76”, is a satirical take on soldiers who fought in wars throughout America’s history. Created in anticipation of the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976, soldiers range from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam. Doyle focused on depicting soldiers and the public perception of them from each war.
