The Healthy Communities Research Institute Distinguished Dissertation and Thesis Awards
The Healthy Communities Research Institute Distinguished Dissertation and Thesis Awards recognize the highest level of graduate student scholarship at Kent State University and highlight the original and innovative work of our master’s students and doctoral candidates researching community health.
Doctoral Candidates
Selection Criteria
• Originality
• Innovativeness
• Scholarly excellence
• Methodological sophistication
• A significant contribution to the field
• Time to degree: Nominees who will have completed their doctoral training in six years or less will be prioritized. If the time to degree is longer than six years, your dissertation advisor should address this in the letter of support.
Award Amount
Doctoral Candidate Awardees will receive up to $2,500 for dissertation research-related expenses.
Master student Awardees will receive up to $1,000 for thesis research-related expenses.
Nomination
Doctoral Candidates must have an approved dissertation proposal (prospectus) by the date the awards are announced. The awards will be announced on May 1, 2023.
Thesis students must have an approved thesis topic and provide a complete description of the thesis plan. Academic units have different thesis processes. Your advisor should describe the process in the letter of support.
Deadline
The deadline for the online application (all materials must be submitted) by April 14, 2023, 5:00 p.m. (ET).
How to Apply
1. Prepare a dissertation or thesis summary, budget, and curriculum vitae.
2. Arrange for one letter of support from your dissertation or thesis advisor.
3. Submit your materials to the Healthy Communities Research Institute Dissertation Awards. Once you submit your application, your thesis or dissertation advisor will receive an email requesting the letter of support via the online system. You do not upload the letter of support.
4. We will notify awardees on May 1, 2023.

Doctoral Candidate Application Guidelines
A complete application includes:
• Dissertation Summary
• Curriculum Vitae
• Budget
• One Letter of Support (from the Dissertation Advisor)
Dissertation Summary:
Format: Nomore than 7 pages. Double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inchmargins, numbered pages, and your name on each page (header)
o Address your dissertation summary to an audience of reviewers who may not be familiar with your field
o Include all appropriate details necessary for judging the quality of your research
o Include the following in yoursummary with these sections
Statement of the problem
Literature Review and gaps in current knowledge
Methods
Data Analysis
Community Health significance of the research
Timeline
o You may include the following (these are not included in the 7-page limit)
Citations:
Should be included for references
Can be either footnotes or endnotes
Can be single-spaced
Appendix:
Non-textual material,such as charts or tables
Curriculum Vitae:
Format: No more than two pages.12-pointfont, 1-inchmargins, numbered pages, and your name on each page
o Educational and professional achievements
o Degrees or certificatesreceived
o Research publications/presentations
o Awardsfor achievement or service
o Recent grants orscholarships
Budget
Format: No more than one page,single-spaced with 12-pointfont, 1-inchmargins, line-item budget, a brief narrative of budgeted items, and your name on the page.
One Letter of Support:
o HCRI staff will contact your dissertation advisor to upload the letter ofsupport. Thisletter must be from your dissertation advisor.
