Researching Queer Britain

The course explores the United Kingdom’s LGBTQ culture and history, with focused field research experiences for student participants. Led by Kent State LGBTQ Studies faculty, the course will connect with Goldsmiths--University of London (which has the first and only graduate degree in Queer History), Queer Britain (the UK national LGBTQ history museum), Outing the Past (the UK’s LGBTQ History Month initiative), and Cara-Friend, Northern Ireland’s national LGBTQ organization.

The class will travel to London and Belfast, and includes lectures by leading scholars, visits to museums and historical landmarks, and other focused activities. Students will engage in original field research, conducting video-based oral history interviews that will become part of both the Queer Britain Virtually Queer collection and the Cara-Friend archives.
