Kent State University unveiled the first full-size statue of baseball legend Thurman Munson, honoring the former Yankees captain and university alumnus who died in a plane crash at the height of his career.
The bronze statue, commissioned through private donations, was dedicated at a ceremony at Schoonover Stadium, where Munson once played college baseball before becoming one of Major League Baseball's most accomplished catchers.
"For me, this is a day where we celebrate excellence. It's a day where we celebrate Kent State and it's a day when we celebrate the excellence at Kent State", said Kent State University President Todd Diacon.
