Kent State Hosts Maj. Ian Rutherford, April 20Posted Apr, 16, 2010
Kent State University’s Lemnitzer Center for NATO and European Union Studies announces its spring semester program. The center’s speaker will be Maj. Ian Rutherford, who is an assistant professor at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC) teaching courses in Canadian politics, international studies and strategic studies. He is also concurrently serving as the Canadian Forces’ Visiting Defense Fellow at the Queen’s University Centre for International Relations.
Rutherford will deliver his lecture, "Canadian Defense Policy: Past Determinants, Future Prospects,” on Tuesday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 317 of the Kent Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.
He will address some misguided perceptions of Canadian policy, such as “Canada’s defense problem is that it has no defense problem,” situated as it is in the shadow of the United States. By offering remarks on the Cold War era and then the post-Cold War years, he will emphasize that Canadian policy makers have displayed a shrewd and realistic appreciation of Canada’s place in the world and that Canada has been able to leverage its foreign and defense policies to further its national interests – American accusations of “free riding” notwithstanding.
Rutherford has an honours bachelor’s degree in political science from Acadia University, a master’s in war studies from RMCC, and is completing requirements for a doctorate in international relations at RMCC. He is an air combat systems officer with nearly 4,000 hours of operational flying on the CP-140 Aurora and participated in an exchange tour with the United States Navy flying the P3C Orion. Rutherford has completed a number of staff tours, including a position at the Canadian Expeditionary Force Headquarters where he conducted planning and effects evaluation for the Canadian combat mission in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
