New Kent State Museum Exhibit Focuses on Collecting
Posted Aug, 23, 2010The Kent State University Museum is currently featuring the exhibit Collectors and Collecting in the museum’s Tarter/Miller, Mull and Palmer Galleries. The exhibit reassembles groupings of objects from the Kent State University Museum’s permanent collection based on their provenance from individual, private collections to explore the idea of collectability and highlight the range of motivations and objects that can inspire collectors.
Among the collections on view are Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman’s Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, inkwells, miniatures and wax seals; Jabe Tarter and Paul Miller’s lamps and beaded purses; Paige Palmer’s Ohio art pottery; and Robert and Carolyn Bemis’ Meissen porcelain.
“Museum exhibitions often aim to create a narrative about the function and production of the objects on display,” said Sarah Hume, curator of the Kent State University Museum. “However, this exhibition explores the peculiar phenomenon of collecting – this passion some people have to amass related objects.”
The Collectors and Collecting exhibit will be on display through June 24, 2011.
