Kent State University Mortar Board Chapter Receives National Award

Posted Oct, 8, 2009

The Laurels chapter at Kent State University was among the outstanding chapters to be honored for its excellence at the 2009 Mortar Board National Conference, held July 24-26.

The group was one of just 32 chapters to take home the Golden Torch Award, presented to outstanding chapters that are superb, timely and go above and beyond the minimum standards throughout the academic year.  Only a select amount of Golden Torch Award nominees are chosen to receive the award based on their devotion to Mortar Board's three key ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.

The chapter was among 28 groups to receive a Project Excellence Award, granted by a selection committee to chapters with notable projects in the areas of:  scholarship, leadership, fundraising, service, the national "Reading is Leading" literacy initiative, alumni involvement, or Mortar Board Week. The chapter was recognized with two awards for its projects, a leaf-raking service project and the Spring Read event, at which members held an Easter-themed literacy event at the King Kennedy Center in Ravenna.

Kent State Chapter President Catherine Cousineau was present to accept the chapter's awards.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 227 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation.  The Laurels chapter at Kent State was chartered in 1972 and currently has 32 members.

Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, distinguished politician Condoleezza Rice and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.  Learn more about Mortar Board at www.mortarboard.org.
