Fashion Design Icon Dana Buchman Visits Kent State University

Posted Nov, 23, 2009

On Thursday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Kent State University Jerry Silverman and Shannon Rodgers School of Fashion’s students will receive fashion design feedback of a lifetime. Dana Buchman, fashion designer and industry icon, recently accepted an invitation to serve as the design critic of 17 fashion design students’ senior projects, thanks to an endowment made by Ronald E. Teare of Cleveland.

The School of Fashion is one of only 13 member Schools in the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Buchman, also a member of the CFDA, was recommended to Kent State as an industry professional interested in critiquing the work of senior fashion design students. Each of the students will get about 15 minutes of Buchman’s time. Each student will display four to five outfits sewn in muslin, a test fabric, on a combination of dress forms and models.

“This critique is meant to give the students feedback on their designs in muslin so that they can make any changes they need to make the collection better before they cut in the final fabric,” said Linda Ohrn-McDaniel, an assistant professor in Kent State’s School of Fashion Design and Merchandising. “We are thrilled to have Ms. Buchman provide such invaluable feedback to our students.”

The Senior Design Critiques will take place in the Atrium of Rockwell Hall on the campus of Kent State University. Parking, located off of Lincoln Street, is free, and the event is free and open for observation from the second floor of the atrium. Rockwell Hall is located on the corner of Main Street and Lincoln Street in Kent, Ohio.

The finished designs will be featured during Portfolio, the School’s annual fashion show, slated for April 22 and 23, 2010, on the Kent State campus.

The Senior Design Critics Endowment was made possible by Teare. The program’s purpose is to bring together senior students in the fashion design program with renowned professional designers. Other critics this year are Charles Nolan and design duo Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra.
