What program(s) did you graduate from and what were your graduation years?

I received my MA in 1980 and my Ph.D. in 1990, but in Speech-Language Pathology

Why did you choose your program area(s)?

My undergrad degree from Clarion was also in this area.  a lot of Clarion grads went to Kent and loved it so I checked it out too.

What does this program (or field) mean to you?

I wanted a career in a health sciences field and liked the idea of helping people to communicate better.  Communication differences and disorders can prevent people from fully engaging in their family, school, community, etc.  and can prevent people from achieving their maximum functioning.

How did this program prepare you for your current career?

The masters program fully trained me to be a therapist.   My training was extensive.  The doctoral program prepared me to be both a researcher and an instructor at the college level

Tell us about your recent distinguished professor award.

I have been at ESU for 36 years in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (formerly Speech-Language Pathology). It is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, therefore a public university.

East Stroudsburg University gives this award to one or two faculty members per year.  You are nominated by coworkers and then provide supporting evidence. It is a great honor and I am very grateful for it.

What keeps you connected to Kent State?

I joined the alumni association and read their publications. I get the emails from them and try to participate in activities that I can from a distance. My dog has been on Instagram twice for Kent State.
