Robert Haas Honored by The Tiger Foundation

Hass, a distinguished EHHS alum, was one of three Strasburg Franklin high school graduates to be honored during a local ceremony.

Haas received a master’s degree in Education, Health and Human Services from Kent State University. He attended the University of Akron for ROTC, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant at Camp A.B. Hill in Virginia.

Haas commanded a combat platoon in Korea, earning six medals for his leadership, including the Bronze Star and a Combat Infantryman’s badge. He taught and coached at Strasburg and was an assistant coach for football, basketball and baseball. Haas continued to teach at Massillon City schools and was promoted to principal and assistant superintendent. He joined the Army reserves and was promoted to the rank of Major General for the Ohio Military Reserves.

He volunteered as a Liaison Officer for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His military career spanned 50 years, and included World War II, the Korean War and Persian Gulf War. In 2008, Haas was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in Columbus. He was active in leadership at the AMVETS, American Legion, VFW, Korean War veterans, Ohio Military Reserve Officer’s Association, Ohio Society of Military History, and the Wester Reserve National Cemetery.
