To be able to drive a car in the United States, you must...

  • Take a written test and driving test to get a license,
  • Get a car title,
  • Get license plates,
  • Get a car insurance, and
  • Register your car.

You are responsible for arranging and paying for all these things. Listed below is a step-by-step guideline, required items, and laws you must follow to be able to drive a car in the United States.

Getting Your Driver's License

You must have a US driver's license before you can drive a car in the United States (not a Saudi license). You are responsible for getting and paying for your own driver's license. Follow a step-by-step guide below to get your driver's license.

  1. Prepare the required documents;
    • Valid passport, visa, I-94, DS2019 or I-20 and proof of Social Security number (if ever assigned).
    • Proof of residency. You can bring your housing lease agreement to prove this.
    • Proof of insurance. You are responsible for finding and paying for your own car insurance.
  2. Study for the written test. Please download United States driving rules in Arabic (PDF) to study for the test.
  3. Schedule the written test at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) website. The written test is available in Arabic, although you must be able to read the road sign in English. You can only take the driving test after  you pass the written test.
  4. Once you pass the written test, you can schedule the driving test at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) website. After you pass both the written and driving test you will be able to go through the remainder of the steps to get your license.

Please visit the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) website for more specific information and for test location in Ravenna.

Registering Your Car

Your car must be registered before you can legally drive it in the United States.  Registering your car includes getting license plates.  You are responsible for registering your car yourself and paying for it.  To register your car you need the following items.

  • Your US driver's license.
  • Proof of residency. Your driver's license is NOT proof of residency.  You will need to bring your housing lease agreement.
  • Your car title or your car lease agreement.
  • Proof of insurance.

When you provide these items, two (2) license plates and three (3) stickers will be given to you.  You MUST put the stickers on your license plates.  Two (2) stickers go on the back license plate and one (1) sticker goes on the front.  You will receive a picture showing you where to put the stickers.  You cannot legally drive your car without the stickers.

Ohio Passenger Safety Laws

  • Everyone MUST wear a seatbelt.  It's the law.
  • Infants and young children must ride in a child safety seat until they are 4 years old AND weigh at least 40 pounds.

  • Children and teens ages 8-15 who are not in booster seats must use adult seat belts.
  • You may be bringing a car seat on the airplane; otherwise, you will need to purchase a car seat for all your children at Walmart or Target or another store that provides them in Kent, Streetsboro or the surrounding area.

Parking on Campus

To park your car at the university's parking lots, you will need to have a parking permit. You will get a parking ticket if you park on campus without a parking permit!  To purchase a parking permit, visit Parking and Transit Services

You are responsible for arranging and paying for your housing for the entire length of your stay.  You must pay for your rent each month that you are living in your apartment as stated in your lease agreement.  Rent deposit is usually equal to the amount of three months rent, so plan to have enough money to pay at the time you sign your lease agreement.

For example,

1 month rent = $700
3 months rent = $2,100

Therefore, deposit = $2,100

Usually, including in the deposit is also last month rent, meaning that you do not have to pay the rent in the last month. Therefore, when you move out of your apartment when the lease ends, you will receive your deposit of two months rent, instead of three.  Some landlords might have different policies and practices, though.
So, READ THE LEASE CAREFULLY!

Listed below are different apartment options in the surrounding areas.  It is your responsibility to contact the different locations directly for additional information and to sign a lease agreement. Keep in mind that availability and apartment prices in all areas may change. Apartment prices also vary due to type, location, and size.

Additionally, below the apartment listings you will find realtors listed and a "rent-to-own" option.  Rent-to-own means you can rent a home and your rent money will help you buy it.
