Family Education Rights & Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) Authorization

Family Education Rights & Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) Authorization

FERPA, or the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, is a federal law that protects the privacy of your education records. This includes items such as your student account information and financial aid. If a parent, guardian, or advocate has not been granted FERPA authorization, we are unable to discuss your student information with them. Without this access, your parent, guardian, or advocate may not be able to obtain the needed information from our office to assist you. By reading the instructions or watching the video below, students can learn how to grant FERPA access to a parent, guardian, or advocate.

FERPA Authorization Instructions

  4. To grant FERPA access, select the Add New FERPA Release button.
    1. You can now enter the information of the individual you are granting access to. Any item with an asterisk is required to have something entered.
    2. The passphrase is a phrase that you select for the person to whom you are giving access. University staff will ask for this phrase when they call in to confirm their identity, so make sure it is something they will remember. If your grantee forgets their passphrase, you as the student will be the only one that can remind your grantee of what their passphrase is or reset it.
    3. You must also enter an email address for the grantee as they will receive an email confirming the access and passphrase.
  5. Once you have entered everything, click Submit, and access will be granted.
  6. If you ever need to revoke FERPA access, return to the Grant Online FERPA Authorization screen and select the Revoke Access option.
