Student Expectations

Advisor Expectations

Establish a professional relationship with advisor

  • Finalize your major, career, and graduation plans
  • Prepare for  life after KSU
  • You are expected to continue to drive the conversation with your advisor

Review curriculum, graduation requirements, policies, procedures and deadlines as necessary

  • Complete your Graduation Application on time
  • March 15th for December (Fall semester graduation
  • December 15th for May (Spring semester) graduation

Effectively use GPS audit and plan

  • Accurately utilize GPS plan and audit to plan for next semester courses prior to the advising appointment.
  • Discuss GPS audit and plan with your advisor

Clarifying academic, personal, and career goals and making a plan to achieve those goals

  • Discuss plans post-graduation.
  • Review and reevaluate your goals based on your interests and accomplishments. 

Utilize resources and support services as needed

  • Refer to Career Exploration and Development & college resources (e.g. resume writing, internships, and mock interviews).
  • You should develop relationships with a faculty advisor/mentor to discuss future opportunities.

Know FERPA and maintain confidentiality

  • Understand FERPA and the importance of securing your confidential information.

Establish a professional relationship with student.

  • Continue to develop relationship with student.
  • Review records in advance of the appointment.
  • Continue with a student-driven conversation.
  • Assist student with transition into life beyond KSU (see #4).

  • Complete final review for graduation using GPS.

Create and update a GPS plan with the student

  • Review, update, and revise GPS plan/audit. 
  • Review GPS audit for graduation.

Assist student in clarifying his/her academic, personal, and career goals and assist student in making a plan to achieve those goals

  • Discuss plans post-graduation.
  • Review and reevaluate goals based on interest and accomplishments. 

Review resources and make referrals as appropriate for the individual student.

  • Refer to the Career Exploration and Development & college resources (e.g. resume writing, internships, and mock interviews).
  • Encourage student to develop relationships with faculty advisors/mentors to discuss future opportunities.

Maintain confidentiality.

  • Stay current on issues involving FERPA and other laws relating to confidentiality. 
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and succinct advising notes on student contact in KSU Advising.
