The Kent State University Police Department was recently awarded national accreditation for the ninth time by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. in the Law Enforcement program. The Kent State Police Department was first accredited in 1991.

Six of Kent State University’s Regional Campuses were recently featured in Solar Power World for the installation of solar panels on its campuses, offering cleaner, more sustainable energy that is also more cost effective. 

Kent State alumna Alyssa Mittereder has struggled with an issue faced by many during the pandemic: job loss. Despite the many curve balls thrown her way, Mittereder told Spectrum News 1 Ohio that she is still passionate about the hospitality industry and searches for jobs each day, using the connections she made at Kent State to land a career, hopefully soon.

While colleges across the country have worked to find ways to recruit the next class during the pandemic, Kent State is being recognized for its unique and innovative techniques to find the class of 2025. In lieu of typical on-campus events, the Kent State admissions team has traveled across Ohio and hosted “KSU2U” drive-in presentation experiences for prospective students and families.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder sometimes have a difficult time with social interaction and building relationships. The Autism Society of Greater Akron wanted to help those on the spectrum socialize with others freely and make friends by creating an adult social club. The club was then made possible with two Kent State affiliates and Wendy Cline, a support specialist and licensed social worker at the Autism Society of Greater Akron.

A year before Timothy Griffin graduated from Kent State University at Tuscarawas in 2017 with an Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology degree and a certificate in computer-aided design for manufacturing, a single phone call would launch his career and have him designing life-saving firetrucks before he graduated.

In preparation for honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Kent State’s Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee is requesting that university divisions, departments and student organizations submit programming, activities and events (scheduled Jan. 25-Jan. 31, 2021) to the MLK Events Calendar by Friday, Dec. 4, 2020.

A policy of municipal takeover was implemented to help relieve Flint, Michigan, of financial and political hardships in response to the water crisis. Ashley Nickels, associate professor in the Department of Political Science, extensively researched Flint's municipal takeover for seven years, earning her three awards for her work.

At just 19 years old, Kent State University sophomore Izzy Stewart has inspired hundreds of fellow students to exercise their right to vote. The public relations major has been inspired by those who have come before her here and is taking steps to create political change.

The sixth annual Run the World 5K run/walk to sponsor Kent State University’s study abroad scholarships is going virtual this year. For the first time, fans of Run the World from all over the world can participate remotely in this event designed to support student participation in international education. Participants will complete the 5K on their own time and at their own pace. Organizers invite participants to show their Kent State pride by wearing blue and gold during their run/walk and sharing their photos from all over the world with the Run the World community.

Kent State University recognizes that employees may want to vote on Election Day. As such, supervisors should provide employees with a reasonable amount of time to vote on Nov. 3.

The coming election is an important one, and voters – particularly first-time voters – are navigating a challenging landscape of information, misinformation, PACs, bots, memes, toxic debates and inflamed rhetoric. “Don’t Hate – Debate (And Vote)!” is an all-day teach-in event that will touch on many aspects of the elections, politics, political/social polarization and civil discourse.

It would not be surprising if you have a social media app open right now; however, you may not be getting the enjoyment out of it that you think you are. In a recent publication in Computers in Human Behavior, two Kent State professors examined the relationship between social media usage and boredom. Students may be surprised by the results and parents might be excited by them.

When Curtis Cofojohn returned to Kent State after serving in the Army, he faced an issue many college students do: where was he going to live? Cofojohn’s own experiences with off-campus housing led him to create a website solution that serves the needs of both students and landlords, during the pandemic.

The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame Class of 2020 includes alumnus David C. Lange, BA ‘75, who, following his freshman year at Kent State, entered the U.S. Navy and returned to Kent State after his military discharge to major in journalism. His graduation led to a 40-year newspaper career and numerous years as an advocate for veterans in Ohio.

Black lives and Black cultures have been underrepresented and discriminated against for many years. TEXTURES: The History and Art of Black Hair is an exhibition coming to the Kent State University Museum in 2021 with the help of significant sponsorship from corporate and federal funding that focuses on celebrating and empowering these lives and cultures.
