Minor in Dance

The School of Theatre and Dance offers a Minor in Dance option for Kent State University students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree in another subject and still study dance at the college level. The Dance Minor provides students with an overview of dance through exploration of its contemporary applications. Students wishing to minor in dance are not required to audition.

Admissions for Dance - Minor

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

Any physical practice Dance (DAN) courses may be repeated toward minor requirements. Students must receive permission for placement into the course levels beyond one.

Graduation Requirements

  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be upper-division coursework (30000 and 40000 level).
  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be outside of the course requirements for any major or other minor the student is pursuing.
  • Minimum 50 percent of the total credit hours for the minor must be taken at Kent State (in residence).

Admission to the Dance Minor

Students who wish to minor in Dance must indicate that choice following enrollment at Kent State University. No audition is required for admission.  Students are eligible to declare the Dance Minor and enroll in Level 1  dance courses without auditioning. Students who plan to enroll in Upper-Level (UL)  dance courses to fulfill the Dance Minor will be required to participate in a dance audition.

Audition for the Dance Minor

Students who wish to enroll in the Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies or Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance programs at Kent State must participate in a dance audition for admission. Students who wish to study the dance minor also must participate in a dance audition if they wish to enroll in professional level dance courses.

REGISTER FOR A DANCE AUDITION

Prospective dance students must register for a dance audition through Decision Desk. The link to access Decision Desk is below. Please note that you must create a free Decision Desk account to complete the registration.

Please be prepared to provide the following information:

  1. Information on previous dance experience
  2. Letter of recommendation
  3. A photo for identification purposes

REGISTER FOR A DANCE AUDITION

Letter Of Recommendation Requirements

A letter of recommendation is required. A letter from a current dance instructor is preferred, however a letter from a previous teacher is permitted. The letter should briefly address the student’s technical and creative abilities, degree of commitment, attendance habits and class attitude.

Photo Requirements

The photo does NOT need to be a professional photo or a "dance" photo. It can be an informal snapshot, enlarged photocopy of your Driver's License photo, etc. This photo will be used to ensure that faculty are referring to the correct individual when completing evaluations.

AUDITION FORMAT

The movement portion of the audition takes place in Dance Studio D123 in the Kent Center for the Performing Arts located at 1325 Theatre Drive, Kent, OH 44242.

RESULTS

Dancers auditioning in August will receive their results immediately following the end of the audition day. Dancers auditioning in November, February, and April will receive their results by mail 2 to 3 weeks following their audition.
