Chemistry Major (B.A.)
2016-2017 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]The Bachelor of Arts in chemistry degree has fewer required courses than any of the Bachelor of Science chemistry degree concentration, allowing students greater flexibility in choosing electives and additional concentrations. Although not intended for students who plan to become practicing chemists, it is well suited for those needing a strong chemistry background as preparation for other career opportunities. The degree may be used to meet pre-medicine or pre-dentistry requirements when appropriate courses from biological sciences are used to fulfill elective hours; however, the B.S. in chemistry - biological chemistry degree is strongly recommended for students interested in medical or dental school.
Chemistry Major (B.S.)
2016-2017 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]The chemistry - biochemistry concentration provides one of the strongest possible preparations for medical and dental school. Tailored for students interested in careers in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, as well as those planning to pursue graduate study in biochemistry, it provides ideal preparation for students intending to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, having been designed to closely fit the requirements of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy (NEOUCOP). Students may transfer to NEOUCOP after three years at Kent State, using 16 credit hours of courses from NEOUCOP to complete their Kent State degree requirements. With the appropriate electives, this degree concentration may be certified by the American Chemical Society.
Biological Chemistry Concentration - Pre-Medicine/Pre-Osteopathy/Pre-Dentistry option
2016-2017 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]This concentration is tailored specifically to meet the needs of those students interested in a career in medicine or dentistry. All students pursuing degrees under the Biological Chemistry concentration take a broad range of chemistry, biology and biochemistry courses, as well as physics and mathematics courses. Differentiating this pre-professional option is a course in animal physiology and the possibility of taking a vertebrate anatomy course as a concentration elective. This option meets all pre-medicine and pre-dentistry requirements and provides one of the strongest possible preparations for the MCAT/DAT and for medical and dental school.
2016-2017 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]This traditional Bachelor of Science chemistry degree program is designed for students interested in careers as practicing chemists in industrial research and development, in government research laboratories, or in academia. It includes a strong foundation in both chemistry and related disciplines (physics and mathematics), and provides opportunities to pursue advanced chemistry electives. Students This concentration meets the requirements for certification by the American Chemical Society and is ideal for students who plan to pursue graduate studies in chemistry.
Industrial CHEMISTRY CONCENTRATION
2016-2017 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]The industrial chemistry concentration provides solid training in the major areas of Chemistry as well as practical experience in fields sought by chemical industries. This program provides extensive options for an industrial internship, elective work in other areas of science and technology, and courses in business, patent law and industrial safety. It is designed to prepare students for careers in industry upon graduation.
Materials Chemistry Concentration
2016-2017 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]The chemistry - materials chemistry program is recommended for students interested in pursuing graduate study or industrial careers in materials science, including nanotechnology. Its requirements, similar to those of the traditional chemistry concentration, provides an opportunity for more in-depth study in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic and organic materials, including polymers.
