About the Fulbright Program and Kent State
Fulbright Pre-Academic Program
The Fulbright Program is a prestigious international academic exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. government. Since its founding in 1946, it has promoted mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through educational and cultural exchange. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals and artists from more than 160 countries to study and conduct research in the United States, awarding approximately 4,000 scholarships each year. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
The Fulbright Pre-Academic Training Program provides academic, linguistic and cultural preparation for approximately 40 Fulbright grantees before they begin their graduate programs across the United States. During this four-week program in Kent, Ohio, participants strengthen academic communication skills, learn about life in the U.S. and prepare for a successful transition to graduate study. At Kent State University, the program is hosted by the Gerald H. Read Center for International and Intercultural Education (CIIE) within the College of Education, Health and Human Services (EHHS), in collaboration with the English as a Second Language (ESL) Center in the College of Arts and Sciences.
