Doctoral Candidate Paula Pacheco Studies in School of Health Sciences

Paula Pacheco

EHHS welcomes Paula Mello Pacheco, a visiting Ph.D. candidate scholar from the University of São Paulo (USP), in Brazil. A speech language pathologist, Paula is continuing her study of social developmental aspects of autism under Lisa Audet. She owns a private autism treatment center in Brazil and works as a certified DIR Floortime Expert Training Leader.

As a doctoral student at USP, Paula is involved in a two-and-a-half-year follow-up study of autistic children ages 2 to 8, who receive intervention using the DIR/Floortime model. DIR is the Developmental, Individual-differences, and Relationship-based model developed by Stanley Greenspan, Ph.D. While studying at Kent State, Paula is involved in a number of projects including research regarding comprehension of mental state words in bilingual children with and without autism, and the effectiveness of virtual reality on the expressive language skills of autisic children with minimal language skills. She is also studying Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology, two areas not currently integrated into autism intervention in Brazil.

Join Paula at the Aggarwal-Blackburn Scholar lecture series on Wed., April 17, from noon - 1 p.m. in White Hall room 200, when she shares her expertise on the significance of relationship development for children with autism.
