Athletic Training Preceptors' Awareness, Perceptions, and Integration of Clinical Teaching Models: A Mixed Methods Study
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to assess athletic training preceptors’ awareness, perceptions, and integrations of the SQF, OMP, and SNAPPS clinical teaching models. Graham et al.’s (2023) Modified Clinical Teaching Models Survey was used to assess preceptors’ awareness of clinical teaching models. This survey was followed up with semi-structured interviews that aimed to understand preceptors’ perceptions and integration of these clinical teaching models in practice. These findings were contrasted against preceptors who did not use clinical teaching models.
These findings show that while only half of athletic training preceptors are aware of either the SQF, OMP, or SNAPPS model, many preceptors believe using clinical teaching models is beneficial. Preceptors believed that the collaboration and structure clinical teaching models provided allowed students to promote their clinical thinking skills. Additionally, these preceptors were able to provide immediate, purposeful feedback and were able to systematically engage with their students. These themes were contrasted with preceptors who did not use clinical teaching models. This cohort of preceptors mentioned using unstructured teaching techniques such as self-directed learning and struggled with their type and timing of feedback. Overall, this study showed that clinical teaching models are beneficial tools to use for clinical education.
