Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $69,000 or less, persons age 60 and up, and persons with disabilities who need assistance in preparing their own tax return.
IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Kent State also offers assistance to international students.
See Publication 3676-B for services provided and check out the What to Bring page to ensure you have all the required documents and information our volunteers will need to help you. Volunteers cannot help you without hard copies of all required information. We do not have printing capabilities on site.
You must bring original Social Security cards (or SSA-1099) for anyone listed on the tax return and photo identification for the taxpayer and spouse. The spouse must be present if you file a joint return. International students must bring a passport and a visa.
VITA tax preparation for 2025 returns has concluded. Final pick ups are in The Donald S. and Johnna F. Grant Atrium in Crawford Hall, Wednesday April 8 (4 pm - 6 pm) and Thursday, April 9 (11:30 am - 6:30 pm).
Questions can be sent to vita@kent.edu. Please be advised that we cannot answer personal tax questions or provide tax assistance to those preparing their own returns.
If you missed our VITA tax clinics, you can prepare and e-file your own returns for free using myfreetaxes.com. International students at Kent State may also follow instructions in the international student tax packet for using Sprintax.
