Announcing the Beer Research Award

The Department of History is extremely pleased to announce the establishment of the Beer Research Award, named in honor of the late Barrett L. Beer, our long-time departmental colleague and specialist in the history of Tudor England.  After completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University, Barry taught at the University of New Mexico before moving to Kent State, where he served as a faculty member for thirty-eight years.  In addition to his work as a dedicated but demanding classroom teacher, Barry was also a prolific researcher whose publications include Rebellion and Riot: Popular Disorder in England during the Reign of Edward VI and Tudor England Observed: the World of John Stow.

After retiring in 2002, Barry remained a steadfast supporter of the department before passing away in April at the age of 89.  To honor Barry’s commitment to faculty research in the discipline of history, Barry’s wife Jill, who passed away herself last month, and the couple’s daughter, Caroline, an accomplished political scientist, seeded the Beer Fund to help history faculty with the expenses associated with original archival research—the heart of the discipline.

We cordially invite Barry’s former students and colleagues to contribute to the Barrett L. Beer History Faculty Research Fund, Account #36443.
