EVENTS THROUGHOUT APRIL TO CELEBRATE EARTH MONTH

Kent State University celebrates Earth Month through a series of events through April 29 across the East Liverpool, Kent and Stark campuses.

“We hope that the variety of Earth Month events will allow students with different interests to engage, learn about sustainability on campus and take action,” says Melanie Knowles, sustainability manager for Kent State’s facilities planning and operations.

The Office of Sustainability collaborated on activities and workshops relating to environmental issues and sustainability, while featuring films and speakers to help address these topics. Check the website for a complete list of events, but some highlights include:

  • April 12, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Earth Month Activities, Risman Plaza (If rain, 2nd floor of the Kent Student Center)
  • April 13, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. – The 11th Annual Who's Your Mama Environmental Film Fest, Kent Student Center Kiva
  • April 18, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Celebrate Earth Day With Biological Sciences, Cunningham Hall Mezzanine
  • April 19, 6 to 8 p.m. – Speaker: Kent State University Alumni Brent Ian Wesley from the Akron Honey Company, Kent Student Center Kiva
  • April 20, at 1 p.m. – Arbor Day and RecycleMania Tree Planting, location to be determined depending upon RecycleMania Residence Hall rankings
  • April 22, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Earth Day Environmental Justice Conference, Kent State University at East Liverpool, Slak Shak Purinton Hall
  • April 23, 1 to 4 p.m. – Earth Day Celebration, Kent State University at Stark, Campus Center Lot and Pond Area
  • April 29, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Arbor Day Wetland Tree Planting and Restoration Workshop, meet at Cunningham Hall Greenhouse Garage

Various student organizations have collaborated with the Office of Sustainability to host Earth Month events throughout the month of April. Participating student organizations include the Kent State Environmental Society, Ocean Motion, Sustainability Club, KSU Bird Club and Kent State Biology Club.

“We’re excited about the number of student organizations and new partners collaborating with us offering creative programs throughout the month, from plant identification walks to Earth-inspired poetry painted on rain barrels,” says Leah Graham, outreach and recycling coordinator for Kent State’s facilities planning and operations.
