The Italian Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program in the language, literature, history, theater, music and art of Italy. Students are introduced to Italian civilization and culture from the Romans to the present, with a focus on a wide range of various subjects across multiple disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Understand Italian culture through interdisciplinary contexts to produce a personal, informed and critical understanding of Italy.
  2. Demonstrate extensive knowledge of Italian culture and society and develop the ability to grasp cultural, social, artistic, political, historical, economic issues and more relevant to Italy and Italians.
  3. Identify, interpret, and explain the major developments and forces shaping Italian social, political and cultural history.
  4. Understand, discuss and evaluate the role of key trends and works in Italian literature, cinema and other forms of cultural production.
Admissions

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

International experience (xxx89) courses taken through Kent State's Florence program may be included with the permission of the director of the Italian Studies minor. No more than six credit hours can be taken from the same course subject.

  • No more than 6 credit hours of a special topics (xxx95) course can count towards the minor requirements.
  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be upper-division coursework (30000 and 40000 level).
  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be outside of the course requirements for any major or other minor the student is pursuing.
  • Minimum 50 percent of the total credit hours for the minor must be taken at Kent State (in residence).
