To further enhance our current procedures and process for handling complaints and reports regarding discrimination and harassment, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Compliance in the Division of People, Culture and Belonging is committed to fostering a positive, healthy and safe work and academic environment. Our aim is to ensure that everyone has equal access to employment and educational opportunities. Below, you will find important information and resources available to all members of the Kent State community:

Investigative Procedures

University policy 5-16 prohibits discrimination and harassment based on race, color, religion, gender, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, disability, genetic information, age, and protected military or veteran status. The University’s current procedures for investigating students, faculty and staff complaints or allegations of racial, religious and ethnic hate incidents or incidents of harassment that occur during a class or university-sponsored event held at the institution play a vital role in ensuring compliance with this policy. The procedures include:

  • Option to submit a complaint or report anonymously
  • Implementation of possible disciplinary actions
  • Requirement to communicate investigation outcomes

Future Training Requirements

A training model created by the Ohio Department of Higher Education is available to all institution administration, faculty and staff. The training model will teach participants how to respond to racial, religious and ethnic hate incidents, or incidents of harassment that occur during a class or university-sponsored event held at the institution at the time the incident occurs. Additionally, administrative policy 5-16.3 addresses training in response to racial, religious and ethnic hate incidents or incidents of harassment.

Anti-Religious Hate Task Force

The Anti-Religious Hate Task Force was established to focus on addressing and combating antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Christian hate. This dedicated group is committed to confronting issues of hatred, harassment, bullying or violence directed at individuals because of their actual or perceived religious identity within the institution. The Anti-Religious Hate Task Force unites faculty, staff and students to collaboratively review existing policies and procedures. The task force’s mission is to identify opportunities for improvement and provide informed recommendations aimed at strengthening both the sense of belonging and the overall safety for every member of the Kent State community.
