Animal Assurance & Accreditation Information

Animal Welfare Assurance

Kent State University has an approved Animal Welfare Assurance (AWA) on file with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW). Public Health Services (PHS) awarding units — NIH, CDC, and FDA — will not provide awards for research involving animals unless the participating institution holds an AWA, and the institution has verification of approval by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for the components of the proposal related to the care and use of animals. Kent State University's AWA Number is: A3571-01.

  • The AWA provides:
    • Commitment that our institution will comply with Public Health Service, with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and with the Animal Welfare regulations.
    • A description of our animal care and use program.
    • Designation of the institutional official responsible for compliance with the AWA.  At KSU, the Vice President for Research is the appointed institutional official.

Accreditation

The KSU Animal Care and Use program is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. AAALAC International is a private, non-profit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. Kent State University's AAALAC Accreditation Number is 000665.
