Kent State to Honor Veterans on Nov. 9

Kent State University will hold its annual Veterans Day observance on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. on the Student Green at Risman Plaza.

The outdoor program, Honoring All Who Serve, will include a flag-raising ceremony conducted by a joint color guard from the university’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs, remarks from Kent State President Beverly Warren and guest speakers. Retired Petty Officer 1st Class Mark Gainer, who currently serves as president of the Kent State Veterans Club, will be the guest speaker.

All are invited to come and pay tribute to America’s veterans. A special invitation is extended to Kent State faculty, staff, students and community members who are veterans, active service members or who have family members in the military.

A reception in the Kent Student Center Kiva lobby will follow the brief program. In the event of inclement weather, the rain location will be the Kent Student Center Kiva.

The Kent State University Board of Trustees approved the updated Kent State Complete College Ohio Campus Completion Plan as part of a state and institutional commitment to increase dramatically the number of college degrees awarded in Ohio. The plan was approved during the Board’s regular quarterly meeting held May 22.

Kent State University hopes to address the police officer shortage by expanding its police academy to Twinsburg, Ohio, this fall. 

Kent State University will hold its 54th annual commemoration honoring the memory of May 4, 1970, a tragic day when the Ohio National Guard fired on Kent State students during an anti-war protest on campus, killing four students, wounding nine others and sparking a turning point in American history.
