Degree Programs

Kent State University’s School of Art is one of Ohio’s top schools in visual art, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in Art Education, Art History, and Studio Art. Our program offers a wide array of studio disciplines, technology and design tools, new state-of-the-art facilities, a world-class faculty, access to research libraries and museums, and many opportunities for students to enrich their experience. Kent State is a perfect place for fine and liberal arts to come together in creative and inspiring ways.

ART EDUCATION

The undergraduate program in Art Education provides a rigorous series of coursework combined with hands-on experiences that prepare students for Pre-K-12 Visual Art Licensure. Graduates effectively teach visual art by applying a learner-centered pedagogy to embrace the many dimensions of human intelligence and aesthetic education. Students learn to create safe and equitable learning environments in which to nurture life-long skills in problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and constructing meaning. Licensed art education teachers who complete an art education master’s degree at Kent State University develop a focused competence in the visual arts as well as an intellectual understanding of the history and current issues of the field of art education. The School of Art offers B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art Education with the option of a 100% online or hybrid M.A. degree.

ART HISTORY

The Art History program examines both the creative expressions of individual artists and the cultures that supported them, encompassing African, Asian, American and European traditions. The program provides a strong foundation for the successful pursuit of advanced degrees and other opportunities in the field, including teaching, research, publishing and curating. Students learn and grow in a dynamic, challenging, and supportive department. In addition to the eight full-time faculty, visiting professors from departments in cognate fields and from other institutions are invited to present a variety of courses as special topic offerings. The School of Art offers B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art History.

STUDIO ART

The School of Art offers the largest variety of Studio Art disciplines of any public university in the state of Ohio: Ceramics, Drawing, Glass, Jewelry/Metals/Enameling, Painting, Print Media and Photography, Sculpture and Expanded Media, and Textiles.  Students work with traditional and non-traditional materials while learning contemporary art concepts.  Our state-of-the-art facilities are located under one roof, including a school-wide digital fabrication studio called the ARTech Studio. Students are encouraged to work across disciplines and employ a contemporary approach to art making, helping them define what it means to be an artist and a maker in the 21st century. The School of Art offers B.A., B.F.A., M.A., and M.F.A. degrees in Studio Art. Students pursuing the B.F.A. or M.F.A. must choose a concentration from the disciplines listed above.
