CS Placement Exams

Computer Science Placement Exams

To aid students in selecting the proper starting point in the program, the department offers two optional placement exams.

Computer Science Placement Exam

The optional Computer Science Placement Exam is intended to help a prospective student choose the proper starting point in the program. This short exam can be completed in approximately 10-20 minutes, and will recommend that the student begin with either:

  • CS 10051 Introduction to Computer Science,
  • CS 10062 Programming for Problem Solving in Sciences,
  • CS 13011 Computer Science IA: Procedural Programming, or
  • CS 13012 Computer Science IB: Object Oriented Programming.

Taking this exam is not required, and the prospective student is free to choose his or her own starting point, but this exam does give the department's recommended starting point.

CS I Blue / Gold Placement Exam

The optional CS I Blue / Gold Placement Exam is intended to help students who are taking CS 13011 Computer Science IA or CS 13012 Computer Science IB choose the proper section of those courses. There are two sections of those courses that meet at the same time - a Blue section and a Gold section.

This optional exam will recommend either the Blue or Gold sections to place eligible students together with other students who have a similar level of familiarity with computer science concepts, but the prospective student is free to choose his or her own section.
