SLIS Assistant Professor/Goodyear Professor of Knowledge Management Denise Bedford, Ph.D., Lecturer Nancy Lensenmayer and alumna Jennifer Kunkler Donley, M.S. ’13, are collaborating on a paper for Advances in Librarianship. Their work, titled “The Role of Librarians in a Knowledge Society: Valuing Our Intellectual Capital Assets,” was one of only eight to be accepted for inclusion in Advances for Librarianship vol. 39. The collaboration began as a workshop they gave at the Ohio Library Council conference in 2013.

At its March 2015 meeting, the university’s Board of Trustees approved emeritus status for retired Professor Carolyn S. Brodie, Ph.D.

Adjunct instructor Catherine Closet-Crane, Ph.D., gave a presentation titled "Listening to Shells and Discovering a Lost World" at the DOCAM 2014 conference in Kent Ohio on August 7, 2014. Exhibited as part of the MuseLab Documents Instantiation was her painting illustrating the topic of the presentation.

Adjunct instructor Magda El-Sherbini is the recipient of the 2015 Margaret Mann Citation, which will be presented at the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Awards Ceremony at the American Library Association Annual Conference and Exhibition in San Francisco on June 27, 2015. The award recognizes outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification and includes a $2,000 scholarship, which El-Sherbini chose to split between two school libraries: the Catholic University of America’s Department of Library and Information Science and SLIS.

Assistant Professor Leisa Gibbons, Ph.D., has received the merit-based Australian Council of Professors and Heads of School in Information Systems (ACPHIS) Ph.D. Medal for her doctoral thesis titled “Culture in the continuum – You Tube, Small stories and Memory making.” Posted Nov. 3, 2015

SLIS Associate Professor Meghan Harper, Ph.D., has been named to a two-year term on the American Association for School Librarians (AASL) Standards and Guidelines Implementation Committee. The charge of the committee is to implement the comprehensive plan created to ensure a shared national vision for the 21st-century learner. Posted Sept. 8, 2015.

Associate Professor Meghan Harper, Ph.D., was appointed as the Kent State University SLIS liaison on the Ohio Educational Library Media Association’s (OELMA) board. In this role, Harper will work to strengthen the connection between SLIS students pursuing library media licensure and their professional association, and share knowledge about best practices in school librarianship and professional development.

Assistant Professor Frank Lambert, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Meghan Harper, Ph.D., and doctoral student and alumna Shelley Blundell, M.L.I.S. ‘09, presented a poster titled “Conceptualizing and Implementing Dispositional Assessments for Students At the Kent State University (KSU) School of Library and Information Science (SLIS)” at the Works in Progress poster session of the ALISE 2015 Annual Conference in Chicago on Jan. 27. Lambert’s trip was partially funded by the University Teaching Council Travel Grant at the maximum amount ($500).

SLIS Associate Professor Karen Gracy, Ph.D., attended the Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI) at the University of Maryland campus in College Park, Md., from July 13-17, 2015, where she led a workshop on developing audiovisual archives curriculum and presented a paper titled “Developing a Pedagogical Framework to Prepare Archives Professionals for Effective Management of Audiovisual Archives.” Posted on Sept. 8, 2015.

Museum Education Monitor named Objects of Experience: Transforming Visitor-Object Encounters in Museums by Assistant Professor Kiersten Latham, Ph.D., and Indiana University museum studies program director Elee Wood, Ph.D., the “Best Museum Education Book of 2014.”

Assistant Professor Kiersten Latham, Ph.D., was interviewed on “The Museum Life” program on VoiceAmerica internet radio for her book titled Objects of Experience: Transforming Visitor-Object Encounters in Museums, co-authored with Indiana University museum studies director Elee Wood, Ph.D. The book was named “Best Museum Education Book of 2014” by Museum Education Monitor.

An article titled “What is ‘the real thing’ in the museum? An interpretative phenomenological study,” by Assistant Professor Kiersten Latham, Ph.D., was published in Museum Management and Curatorship. The article describes a study of the different ways museum visitors understand their experience of “the real thing” (TRT) in the museum context.

Assistant Professor Kiersten F. Latham’s research on spiritual or numinous experiences with museum objects was the subject of a blog post on the Museum Questions website: “When is art viewing a spiritual activity?” The blog writer referred specifically to Latham’s article, “Numinous Experiences With Museum Objects,” published in Visitor Studies, vol. 16, no. 1, 2013, as well as an interview in the same publication in which people reflected on her article and on their own numinous experiences.

Assistant Professor Kiersten F. Latham’s, Ph.D., article on “Lumping, Splitting and the Integration of Museum Studies with LIS” was published in the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science Vol 56, No 2 Spring (2015).

Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., presented a talk (in Spanish) at the International Board on Books for Young People: Congreso Internacional de Lectura conference in Havana, Cuba, on Oct. 29, 2015. Her presentation was titled "Conocer las fuerzas y aprovecharlas: Literatura internacional para niños e intercambio cultural subversivo" ("Knowing the forces and harnessing them: International children’s literature and subversive cultural exchange"). Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., has been appointed as chair of the  2016 Notable Children’s Recordings Committee by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). An article by Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., “Gaming the Reading Experience: Book-related Social Spaces for Young Children,” was published in the special issue of Digital Youth 2(4), p. 29-40, in September 2015. The idea for this peer-reviewed, special issue on Digital Youth came out of the Digital Youth Research Network, which has held pre-conference workshops at the iConference over the last three years. Assistant Professor Marianne Martens’ class on Art and Story: The Study of Children’s Picturebooks hosted a presentation by VCD Assistant Professor Doug Goldsmith during a face-to-face class meeting on Saturday, April 11. Goldsmith presented “Visual Communication and Illustration” and provided visual samples of characters from various children’s books as well as illustrated pages and spreads from children’s books, allowing him to elaborate on how character development, composition, color, space, and several other essential design elements were used to establish mood, meaning and engaging the eye. Posted June 29, 2015

Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., presented a poster titled “Through the Looking Glass: How Danish LIS Education Reflects Mandates on Culture” at the Works in Progress poster session of the ALISE 2015 Annual Conference in Chicago on Jan. 27. 

A peer-reviewed article by Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., “Reading and ‘Gamification:’ Joining guilds, earning badges, and leveling up,” was published in the Winter 2015 issue of Children & Libraries: The Journal of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). Children & Libraries is the official peer-reviewed journal of ALSC, which is “the world’s largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children.”

In February 2015, Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., presented a talk on international children’s literature at Akron Public Library. Shannon Schilling and Sophia Louise Van Der Schyf, students who previously attended her International Children’s Literature and Librarianship course, organized the afternoon and participated in the talk.

Along with colleagues from the University of Washington, the University of British Columbia, Rutgers, and the University of Copenhagen, Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., was co-organizer of a day-long, pre-conference workshop at the iConference in Newport Beach, Calif., in March 2015. The event was called “Digital Youth Research Network: Defining the Field, Building Connections, and Exploring Collaborations.” She also served as a reviewer ahead of the conference.

Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D., published a blog post titled “Evolving the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video” on the ALSC blog: The official blog for the Association for Library Service to Children, on April 11, 2015.

At the 2015 Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth held in April at Kent State University, Assistant Professor Marianne Martens, Ph.D.; Shannon Schilling, M.L.I.S. ’07, and Sophia Van Der Schyf, M.L.I.S. ’14, gave a presentation titled “From Children’s Books to Global Citizenship: The Power of Books from Around the World.”

An article titled “From good to great managers: The case for a structured continuing education program in library management” by Assistant Professor Miriam Matteson, Ph.D., and alumni Susan Musser, M.L.I.S. ’14, and Elizabeth Allen, M.L.I.S. ’14, was published in Library Management, Vol. 36. The paper examines the perceptions of librarians toward continuing education in library management.

An article by SLIS Assistant Professor Rebecca Meehan, Ph.D., titled “Electronic Health Records in Long-Term Care: Staff Perspectives,” was published on PubMed.gov, on Oct. 12, 2015. Assistant Professor Rebecca Meehan, Ph.D., co-authored a conference presentation with Hiram College's Robin Shura, Ph.D., titled "Residents' Perspectives on Living with Vision Impairment in Long Term Care" at the roundtable discussion at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in Chicago in August 2015. SLIS Assistant Professor Rebecca Meehan, Ph.D., is co-author (with S. Grogan-Johnson, K. McCormick and N. Miller) of an article titled “Results of a National Survey of Pre-Service Telepractice Training in Graduate Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Programs,” which was published in Contemporary Issues in Communication Science and Disorders, Volume 42, pp. 122-137.  Meehan collaborated on this research project as a co-investigator with the Kent State University Speech Pathology and Audiology program in the School of Health Sciences. Assistant Professor Rebecca Meehan, Ph.D., presented “Usability Improvements to Electronic Health Records: Finding Realistic Paths to Success” at the International Conference on Health Informatics  in Lisbon, Portugal, in January. The paper will be published in the conference proceedings, pages 514-518, ISBN: 978-989-758-068-0, SCITEPRESS. At the same conference, she was session chair for “Current Research in Health Informatics.”

Assistant Professor Rebecca Meehan, Ph.D., co-presented a webinar as part of the Health Informatics “HI Pulse” series on Feb. 19. Meehan presented Introduction to HL-7 and the HER Functional Model with John Gachago, Ph.D., e-Health Consultant at JWG Global Ltd in Gainesville, Fla., and John Ritter, expert at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. 

Assistant Professor Rebecca Meehan, Ph.D., gave a refereed presentation, “The Evolving Role of Applied Social Scientists in Health Informatics,”  on March 26, 2015, at the Society for Applied Anthropology conference in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Associate Professor David Robins, Ph.D., gave the keynote presentation on “A visual orientation system for e-learning: To use the visual to improve student experience” in March 2015 at the Customer Experience 2015 Conference on UX and Service Design in Copenhagen, Denmark. His presentation described his latest research on how the use of images, icons and symbols helps users navigate and quickly complete otherwise complex tasks on the Internet.

Associate Professor David Robins, Ph.D., has been named the first-ever Director of Education on the Board of Directors for the Information Architecture Institute, a global organization that supports individuals and organizations specializing in the design and construction of shared information environments.

Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Karen F. Gracy, Ph.D., were invited by the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) to present a webinar on “Introducing Cultural Heritage Informatics into the Curriculum of LIS Education” in April 2015. The 44 individuals who participated in the live presentation represented 14 countries (Canada, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States). The session, titled “Dealing with Metadata: Content, Distribution, and Availability,” was moderated by Michael Friedman, American Meteorological Society. Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., was an invited panelist on the session “A new paradigm shift called Digital Art History” for the International Conference on Chen Cheng-po and Modern East Asian Art History, held at the National Palace of Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, Jan. 16 and 17, 2015. She was also participating in the research projects and training at the Academia Sinica Digital Center during her visit in Taipei in January.  

Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., was selected to receive a 2015-2016 Fulbright U.S. scholar grant to Taiwan.

Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Karen F. Gracy, Ph.D., were invited by the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) to present a webinar on “Introducing Cultural Heritage Informatics into the Curriculum of LIS Education” in April 2015. The 44 individuals who participated in the live presentation represented 14 countries (Canada, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States).
